Cornellà de Llobregat, Industrial municipality in Baix Llobregat, Spain.
Cornellà de Llobregat is a municipality in Baix Llobregat situated directly on the alluvial plain of the Llobregat River, about 9 kilometers southwest of Barcelona. The town spreads across relatively flat terrain at around 27 meters elevation and includes several parks and sports facilities.
The area was already settled during Roman times, as reflected in the name, and a document from 980 mentions a church with a defense tower. In the 20th century the municipality grew into one of the industrial centers of the Barcelona metropolitan area.
The old quarter preserves narrow streets from before the industrial era, while the residential neighborhoods are now home to families from across the metropolitan region. The name comes from the Latin personal name Cornelius, pointing to the Roman past of the area.
Several metro lines connect the municipality to Barcelona, with the journey taking about 20 minutes, and buses also run regularly to neighboring towns. Most public areas are accessible, and walks along the river offer quieter moments away from the residential zones.
A former factory building now houses Citilab, a center for digital projects where citizens develop technology for the community. The unusual use shows how old industrial sites become places for new ideas.
