Vigo University, Spanish public university
The University of Vigo is a public higher education institution in the autonomous community of Galicia, in northwestern Spain, with three campuses located in Vigo, Pontevedra, and Ourense. It covers a broad range of fields including engineering, sciences, communication, and design.
The university was founded in 1990, after Galicia gained greater educational autonomy following Spain's return to democracy. Before that, the region depended on the University of Santiago de Compostela, which was the only higher education institution in Galicia at the time.
The university sits in the heart of a Galician-speaking region, and many courses are taught in Galician, Spanish, or English. Visitors walking through any of the three campuses will hear all three languages used naturally in conversation.
Each of the three campuses has its own character: the Vigo campus sits on a hillside outside the city center, while those in Pontevedra and Ourense are closer to their respective town centers. All three are reachable by public transport.
The University of Vigo is also a recognized open-access publisher, which means that research produced here is freely available online without paywalls. This is relatively uncommon among Spanish public universities of similar size.
