Museo Quiñones de León, Municipal museum in Castrelos, Vigo, Spain.
Museo Quiñones de León is a museum housed in a 17th-century manor house inside the Castrelos park in Vigo, displaying European paintings and archaeological objects from different periods. The building retains the layout of a noble residence while also containing dedicated exhibition spaces indoors and outdoors within the park grounds.
Fernando Quiñones donated the estate and its gardens to the city of Vigo in 1925, and the museum opened to visitors in 1937. The first collections were based on artworks from Policarpo Sanz, a local collector whose works formed the starting point for what is shown today.
The ground floor preserves the original living spaces of a marquis, with European paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries still hanging in the rooms where they were displayed by the noble family. Walking through these rooms gives a clear sense of how art and daily life were intertwined in a Galician noble residence.
The museum sits inside Castrelos park, so it is easy to walk through the gardens and paths before or after the visit, as they are freely open. Opening hours can vary between weekdays and seasons, so it is worth checking before you go.
A double row of camellia trees lines the Paseo de Antonio Odriozola inside the park, and these plants bloom in different shades depending on the time of year. The camellia is closely associated with Galicia as a region, and the park is one of the places in Vigo where you can see many varieties side by side.
