Punta de Arinaga Lighthouse

Punta de Arinaga Lighthouse, Maritime beacon at Punta de Arinaga, Gran Canaria, Spain

Description

The Punta de Arinaga Lighthouse is a cylindrical masonry tower standing 13 meters tall on a rocky headland, marked by distinctive red and white horizontal bands that make it visible to passing ships. The structure operates independently using solar panels and transmits a coded light signal to guide maritime traffic.

History

The first lighthouse structure was completed in 1897 as part of the maritime lighting system for the Canary Islands, designed by architect Juan León y Castillo. The site has been rebuilt multiple times, with elements from the original tower preserved in subsequent constructions.

Culture

The former lighthouse building has been restored and transformed into a restaurant offering Canarian-Mediterranean dishes. It bridges maritime heritage with contemporary dining, showing how coastal landmarks adapt to serve communities today.

Practical

The lighthouse is accessible from outside and offers views of the surrounding coast and open sea. The attached restaurant allows visitors to spend time at the site comfortably while taking in the maritime setting.

Did you know?

The lamp from the original 1897 structure was incorporated into the current tower, linking the first-generation lighthouse with modern navigation systems. This reuse demonstrates how historical components have been integrated into contemporary maritime infrastructure.
