Juncalillo de Sur, Scientific interest site in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Spain.
Juncalillo de Sur is a protected natural site in southeastern Gran Canaria featuring rocky coastal formations and natural pools along the shoreline. The area spans several hundred hectares with a complex landscape of cliffs, inlets, and marine habitat that supports diverse wildlife.
The site received protected status from the Canary Islands Parliament in 1987, with formal legal designation confirmed in 1994. This protection was established specifically to safeguard the area's important bird populations and coastal ecosystems.
The site maintains three distinct usage zones - Restricted, Moderate, and General - each contributing to research and environmental education initiatives.
The site is open for visitors to explore the rocky shoreline and observe birds in their natural habitat. Wear sturdy footwear and bring sun protection, as the exposed terrain offers little shade and conditions change quickly.
This is the only coastal Special Protection Area for Birds in all of Gran Canaria. It provides a rare opportunity to observe over 50 bird species that use the site as a critical stopping point during migration and breeding season.
