The stadium received its current name in 2018 to honor Enrique Castro Quini, Real Sporting de Gijón's legendary striker and most prolific goal scorer.

In 1969, El Molinón made history as the first fully covered football stadium in Spain and hosted the country's first televised match in 1970.
