La madre del emigrante, Bronze sculpture at Rinconín Beach, Gijón, Spain
The sculpture depicts a woman with windswept hair and a tight dress, extending her hand toward the sea in a farewell gesture.
The National Institute of Immigration and local authorities commissioned this monument in 1970 to commemorate the Asturian migration waves between 1905 and 1920.
The bronze figure represents mothers who remained in Asturias while their children departed across the Atlantic Ocean in search of new opportunities.
Located along the coastal promenade near Somió neighborhood, visitors can observe the statue against the backdrop of the Cantabrian Sea.
The sculpture underwent multiple restorations since 1976, including repairs after an explosion and the addition of a poem by Gijón poet Alfonso Camín.
