Castillo de Suel, Moorish castle in Fuengirola, Spain
Castillo Sohail is a fortified structure standing about 38 meters above sea level at the mouth of Fuengirola River, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding coastline. The complex includes several towers and walls surrounding the grounds, with different viewing points across the site.
The castle was built in 956 during the Caliphate period and served for centuries as a strategic defense point against sea-based threats. In the 1980s it was transformed into a cultural center, opening its grounds to public events and visitors.
The castle hosts the annual Marenostrum Music Festival from May to September, bringing international performers to perform on the Costa del Sol stage. The event uses the historic walls as a natural backdrop for concerts and shows throughout the warmer months.
The grounds are easy to reach via exit 208A of the Mediterranean Highway, with supervised parking available next to the castle. The site is also located on the bank of a river valley that can be explored on foot.
At the castle's base sits a river park featuring the only navigable waterway in Malaga province, where visitors can rent boats and kayaks. This hidden water route offers an unexpected way to explore the surrounding area from the water.
