A Fonsagrada, municipality of Spain
A Fonsagrada is a municipality in the mountains of Lugo Province, Galicia, Spain, where narrow streets run between old stone buildings and deep valleys open up on all sides. The town center holds a parish church, a chapel, and an ethnographic museum that displays everyday objects and photographs from the region's past.
The area around A Fonsagrada was settled in ancient times, as burial mounds and old settlement remains still show. Over the centuries it became a regular stop on the Camino Primitivo and, like many mountain areas in Galicia, went through long periods of feudal rule and armed conflict.
A Fonsagrada sits on the Camino Primitivo, one of the oldest pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela, and passing pilgrims are a familiar sight on its streets. Local festivals and traditional music still mark the calendar here, giving visitors a chance to see the customs of this mountain community up close.
A Fonsagrada is reachable by road from Lugo, and buses connect it to towns in Galicia and Asturias. The town center is best explored on foot, and several marked trails lead out into the surrounding forests and valleys from the edge of the built-up area.
Just outside the town, the Seimeira de Vilagocende waterfall drops around 50 meters (165 feet) into a wooded gorge and carries a strong flow even in summer. Less often noticed is that the whole municipality is among the most forested in Lugo Province, which draws particular attention during the mushroom season each autumn.
