GREGOR, Solar telescope at Teide Observatory, Tenerife, Spain
GREGOR is a solar telescope with a primary mirror measuring 1.5 meters in diameter, installed at Teide Observatory at an altitude of 2,390 meters. The instrument uses a sophisticated optical system to observe different regions of the sun, including its photosphere and chromosphere across various wavelengths.
The telescope began operations in 2009 with a temporary 1-meter mirror before receiving its permanent 1.5-meter mirror. This upgrade allowed the instrument to reach its full operational capacity and expand its scientific capabilities.
German research institutions collaborate at GREGOR to study the sun's photosphere and chromosphere through visible and infrared wavelength observations.
The observation site sits at high altitude with thin air, which benefits the observations but requires physical acclimatization. Visitors should adapt to the elevation and bring appropriate gear for the extreme conditions.
It ranks as the third-largest solar telescope in the world and is operated by German research institutions. This international collaboration makes it a significant center for solar research.
