Proserpina Dam, Ancient Roman hydraulic structure in Mérida, Spain
The Roman reservoir features a granite block surface with a sloping design, extending 440 meters in length and reaching 21 meters in height.
The dam construction occurred between the first and second centuries to supply water to Emerita Augusta, the capital of Roman Lusitania province.
The name originates from an 18th-century discovered plaque invoking goddess Persephone, connecting the structure to Roman religious practices.
The reservoir continues to serve agricultural irrigation needs through a network of channels and the Los Milagros Aqueduct system.
The structure maintains its original Roman engineering features, including nine rectangular buttresses and an earth-filled core reinforced with cement.
