Vall de Núria, Glacial valley in Queralbs, Spain
Vall de Núria is a glacial valley in the eastern Pyrenees situated at around 2000 meters altitude, surrounded by mountain peaks and alpine meadows. A lake sits at its heart and forms the natural centerpiece of this mountain landscape.
The valley came into prominence in 1931 when political leaders met at the sanctuary to draft the first Catalan Statute of Autonomy. This gathering linked the place to a key moment in the region's modern political history.
The wooden Romanesque statue of the Virgin Mary, discovered in the 12th century, remains the central focus for religious pilgrims who visit the sanctuary. People come to pray before this revered figure and participate in traditions that have developed over many generations.
The valley can only be reached by rack railway from Ribes de Freser or through hiking trails, as no roads serve this location. Visitors should be prepared for limited accessibility and plan for changing weather conditions at this elevation.
The sanctuary operates as a winter sports center with ski slopes supported by modern snow production systems, bringing winter tourism to this high-altitude region. This blend of religious purpose and skiing destination gives the place an unusual dual character.
