Torre de Fornells, Defensive watchtower in Fornells, Menorca

Torre de Fornells is a round defensive structure built from local sandstone on Menorca's northern coast, featuring four levels and military design elements from the early 1800s. The construction displays typical defensive architecture with firing ports and narrow passages designed to restrict access.

The tower was built in 1801 by British forces to defend the Port of Fornells against potential French and Spanish naval threats. This defensive work formed part of Britain's military strategy during its control of the island in the early 1800s.

The tower sits within a fishing community that values the quiet harbor setting, and locals recognize it as a reminder of the island's strategic past under foreign rule. The site remains a reference point in how people understand Menorca's layered history and the influence of colonial powers on its development.

Access to the tower is limited to specific hours, so checking current opening times before visiting is advisable. The location is reachable on foot from town, though the walk to the coast can be demanding during hot weather.

A garrison of roughly 50 soldiers staffed this strategic post and used the tower's height to exchange signals with neighboring fortifications. These communication systems were part of a larger network that monitored the entire coastline.
