El Toro, Mountain summit near Es Mercadal, Spain

El Toro is the highest mountain on Menorca, rising about 358 meters above sea level in the center of the island. A sanctuary crowns the summit and shapes the landscape that draws visitors from across the region.

The name comes from the Arabic word 'tor' meaning elevation, which eventually became El Toro. The sanctuary was built in 1670 and became an important center for the island over time.

The sanctuary at the summit holds a carved image of the Virgin of Monte Toro, who serves as the patron saint of Menorca. Visitors sense the spiritual importance this place carries for local people across generations.

The route from Es Mercadal to the summit follows the ME-13 road with steep sections that require physical effort. Sturdy footwear and plenty of water are advisable, especially during warm weather.

A monument on the summit remembers Menorcan people who emigrated to Florida in the 18th century, created by sculptor Josep Viladomat. This memorial tells of a forgotten migration that many visitors overlook.
