The stone castle features a square layout with high granite walls, multiple towers, and a central courtyard centered around the main tower called El Macho.
The castle's construction began in the 15th century under Count Alonso Pimentel Enríquez, replacing an older fortification that existed before 1132.
The Governor's House within the castle walls contains the Municipal Tourism Office and exhibition rooms dedicated to the history of the Pimentel family.
The castle opens daily from 11:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 22:00 in summer, with reduced evening hours from 16:00 to 20:00 in winter.
The castle's strategic position near the Portuguese border made it a contested stronghold, changing hands between Swiss, French, Spanish, and Portuguese forces.
