Real Monasterio de San Martín de Castañeda, Cistercian monastery in San Martín de Castañeda, Spain.
The Real Monasterio de San Martín de Castañeda is a Cistercian monastery featuring a three-nave church with semicircular apses, granite stonework, and a rose window on its western facade. The structure combines Romanesque architecture with early Gothic elements throughout its design.
The monastery was founded in the 10th century by Abbot Martino and Mozarabic monks from San Cebrián de Mazote, who built upon earlier Visigothic structures. This early establishment made it one of the region's oldest continuous religious communities.
The main entrance displays a relief showing Saint Martin sharing his cloak with a beggar, alongside the original foundation inscription. This imagery reflects the compassion that was central to monastic life here.
The building houses an exhibition featuring sacred art, ethnographic objects, and information about the Atlantic Romanesque route that connects multiple churches from this period. Visitors can explore both the church itself and the displayed items that document monastic life and regional religious heritage.
This monastery is the only Cistercian establishment in Zamora province built at a mountain location near Lake Sanabria. This isolated position in highland terrain sets it apart from the flatter locations typically chosen by other monastic orders in the region.
