The Cathedral of Santa María displays Late Romanesque architecture with Gothic elements, including intricate stone carvings on its south facade and detailed biblical friezes.
Construction of the cathedral started in 1160 under King Ferdinand II of León, marking the return of Christian influence following the Muslim period.
The interior features carved stonework depicting biblical figures, including a Gothic frieze with twelve Old Testament characters in the episciple-side transept.
Located in Plaza de Herrasti, the cathedral maintains regular religious services and houses a museum showcasing religious artifacts from the region.
The neoclassical tower, raised by architect Juan de Sagarvinaga in the late 18th century, replaced earlier structures damaged by the Lisbon earthquake.
