Ciudad Rodrigo Cathedral of Santa María, Romanesque cathedral in Ciudad Rodrigo, Spain.

The Cathedral of Santa María is a Romanesque building with later Gothic elements, distinguished by intricate stone carvings across its facades and towering over the city center. Its interior features a large nave with side chapels and substantial stone sculptures that speak to the craftsmanship of earlier centuries.

Construction began in 1160 under King Ferdinand II of León, following Christian recovery of the region. In the late 18th century, architect Juan de Sagarvinaga rebuilt the tower after earthquakes had damaged earlier structures.

The cathedral displays detailed stone carvings of biblical figures and saints throughout its walls and entrance portals, reflecting how medieval artisans expressed religious devotion through their craft. Visitors can see these works up close and understand how such decoration guided the faithful in a time when many could not read.

The cathedral sits on Plaza de Herrasti in the city center, easily reached on foot and naturally part of the daily rhythm of the town. Regular religious services take place, and visitors can explore a museum with religious artworks from the region, though it is best to check first if services are underway and to be respectful when entering.

The south side displays an unusual collection of biblical caricatures and comic figures hidden among the holy scenes, often overlooked by visitors. These playful details reveal a humorous side of the medieval stone carvers who found ways to inject personality and wit into their sacred work.
