Chapel of Cerralbo, Ciudad Rodrigo, Religious chapel in Ciudad Rodrigo, Spain
The Chapel of Cerralbo is a religious structure in Ciudad Rodrigo with a Latin cross layout, a central dome, and a lantern. It was constructed using stone from the Fuenteguinaldo quarries.
Cardinal Francisco Pacheco de Toledo, who served as Ambassador to Rome and Viceroy of Naples, ordered the chapel's construction in 1585 near Ciudad Rodrigo Cathedral. It later became a burial site for the Cerralbo family.
The chapel houses the marble mausoleum of the Marquesses of Cerralbo with a praying statue by sculptor Mariano Benlliure. This tomb remains a focal point for visitors interested in the family's legacy.
The building has functioned as the parish church of El Sagrario since the late 19th century, when the Cerralbo family transferred it to the Diocese. Visitors should be aware that it may not be accessible during religious ceremonies.
The main nave follows an unusual north-south orientation, differing from traditional Christian temple layouts that typically align east-west. This deviation from the norm makes it a noteworthy architectural feature.
