San Clemente Reservoir, reservoir in Huéscar, province of Granada, Andalusia, Spain
The San Clemente Reservoir sits in the north of Granada province on the Guardal River, surrounded by rolling hills and gentle mountains. The water serves mainly for crop irrigation, while the site also welcomes fishing, boating, swimming, and picnicking.
The reservoir was completed in 1990 as the major water project for the nearby town of Huéscar to secure irrigation during dry periods. The former village of San Clemente, home to about 680 people, was flooded and its residents relocated to a new neighborhood approximately one kilometer away.
The reservoir sits near small villages and reflects how people here have long depended on water management for farming. Historic structures like the Canal de Carlos III and the Pilares de las Ánimas show the region's deep connection to irrigation and agricultural life.
The area sits on easily accessible land with open spaces to relax along the shores. Visitors should know the landscape is open and reaches easily on foot or by car during fair weather conditions.
Due to local geology, much water seeps into the ground, causing the reservoir to often hold less water than its theoretical capacity allows. This natural limitation makes the site less stable than many other facilities in the region.
