Playa de la Herradura, Almuñécar

Playa de la Herradura is a horseshoe-shaped bay along the Costa Tropical, featuring dark sand and gravel beaches bordered by the Punta de la Mona cliffs. The cove extends for several kilometers and offers different areas for swimming and relaxing.

In October 1562, several ships from the Spanish Armada fleet sank near the coast during a naval battle, leaving archaeological remains on the seabed. These wrecks tell the story of an important maritime episode from Spanish history.

The beachfront restaurants, called chiringuitos, serve Mediterranean food and host evening performances of Flamenco during the summer months. These casual spots are where locals and visitors gather to eat and enjoy entertainment together by the sea.

The beach has wooden pathways to the water where you can rent hammocks and umbrellas, plus shower facilities and lifeguard stations at several spots. Early mornings are the best time to visit if you prefer fewer crowds.

The surrounding mountains create a subtropical microclimate that allows swimming and water sports throughout the year. Visitors can enjoy pleasantly warm waters even during winter months.
