Castle of Zalia, Alcaucín, Medieval castle in Alcaucín, Spain

The Castle of Zalia stands on elevated terrain, featuring defensive walls and towers that extend across the mountainous landscape of eastern Málaga province.

Built between the 9th and 14th centuries, this fortress played a defensive role during the Islamic period of the Iberian Peninsula until the Christian Reconquista.

The architectural elements of the castle demonstrate the military engineering practices of medieval Islamic builders in southern Spain.

Visitors need to drive approximately 4 kilometers from Alcaucín village and should bring water supplies, as no facilities exist at the site.

The northeastern corner of the castle contains structural elements that suggest the presence of the original entrance gate to the fortress.
