Pico Espigüete, Mountain summit in Montaña Palentina, Spain.
Pico Espigüete is a 2,450-meter summit with a distinctive pyramidal shape located in the Montaña Palentina range. Its southern slopes descend gradually while the northern side drops steeply with vertical limestone walls.
Geologist Casiano de Prado made the first documented ascent in 1854, opening the peak to mountaineering exploration. This achievement marked the start of climbing activities in the region and drew further interest over time.
The peak sits within the Fuentes Carrionas y Fuente Cobre-Montaña Palentina Natural Park and remains connected to local mountain communities. Pastoral traditions and regional customs have shaped how people live and work in the surrounding villages for generations.
Most hikers start from the villages of Cardaño de Abajo or Cardaño de Arriba, with summer providing the most favorable conditions. The trails are snow-free during these months and daylight hours are long enough for a safe ascent.
The mountain hosts Sempervivum Giuseppii, a plant species discovered in 1935 that grows nowhere else on Earth. This rare plant makes the summit a special place for nature enthusiasts and botanists.
