Pico Murcia

Pico Murcia is a mountain summit in the Cantabrian Range reaching 2,352 meters high. The peak sits within Fuentes Carrionas Natural Park and displays limestone rock formations with alpine meadows spread across its slopes.

This peak formed during the Alpine mountain-building period when tectonic plates collided to create the Cantabrian Range. The geological processes that shaped this summit also molded the wider landscape of the region.

The walking paths around this summit follow old shepherding routes where local communities have herded animals for centuries. These traditional passages show how closely people have lived with this mountain landscape.

Hikers can reach the summit via marked trails starting from the town of Cardaño de Arriba, with summer providing the most favorable conditions for climbing. Checking weather before you go and bringing proper footwear are important precautions for the ascent.

From the summit, visitors can see Espigüete peak, another well-known mountain about 4 kilometers to the south. The location also marks where León and Palencia provinces meet.
