Church of San Jorge, Las Fraguas

Church of San Jorge is a neoclassical building in Las Fraguas surrounded by 40 Corinthian columns arranged in a hexastyle peripteral layout. The structure sits on a hill enclosed by a low stone wall, with a small cemetery positioned on one side.

The building was constructed in 1890 on the site of a medieval hermitage. It was commissioned by the Dukes of Santo Mauro and later donated to the community of Las Fraguas.

The church serves the local community as a place for religious gatherings and displays the architectural skill of Spanish craftsmen from the 19th century. It stands as a visible expression of faith and building ambition during this period.

The building is easily accessible and clearly visible from its elevated location. Visitors can view the facade and layout from the surrounding wall, especially during early morning or late afternoon hours when light enhances the architectural details.

The structure reproduces design elements of ancient Greek temples with architrave and cornice but omits the triglyphs and metopes from the pediment. This selective use of classical elements shows a thoughtful architectural choice of the period.
