Asunción de Nuestra Señora Church, Robledo de Chavela, Gothic church in Robledo de Chavela, Spain.
Asunción de Nuestra Señora Church is a Gothic building in Robledo de Chavela positioned at the highest point of the town center. It has robust buttresses supporting its walls, a pentagonal apse, and a thirty-meter tower with a square base topped by a balustrade decorated with eight ceramic vases.
The building was constructed between the 15th and 16th centuries on top of an earlier Romanesque temple. The varying stonework and granite blocks visible in the walls document the different construction stages from both periods.
The main altar holds thirty-two oil paintings from around 1500 created by artists linked to the Catholic Monarchs and Cardinal Cisneros. These works reveal how the local community was connected to the royal court through its religious art.
The church is located on Plaza de la Iglesia, the highest point of the town center, making it easy to find on foot. The main entrance is marked by the coat of arms of donor Diego García Medrano, which decorates the facade.
The interior vaults are covered with mural decorations showing dragon head shapes and stone block patterns, with around eighty painted dragons distributed throughout the church. These decorative elements create an unusual visual effect across the ceilings and walls.
