Mercado de San Fernando, Municipal marketplace in Embajadores district, Madrid, Spain
Mercado de San Fernando is an indoor marketplace in the Embajadores district with two levels, high ceilings, and natural lighting throughout. The building features wide corridors that allow customers to move freely between the many vendor stalls.
The building was designed by architect Casto Fernández-Shaw in 1944 to serve residents with fresh food during the post-war period. It was built to meet the needs of the Lavapies and Arganzuela neighborhoods.
The market reflects the neighborhood's diversity through food stalls offering dishes from Madrid, Peru, Venezuela, Japan, Mexico, and Greece. These different cuisines show how people from around the world have made this area their home.
The market is located in the heart of the neighborhood and is easy to reach on foot with plenty of room to browse. Weekdays and Saturdays are when most vendors are fully operational, making these the best times to shop.
Visitors can purchase books by weight at specialized stalls, a rare offering found alongside fresh produce and craft beers. This unusual combination gives the market a distinctive character you will not find elsewhere.
