The natural space spans 1,538 hectares, combining the southern slopes of Mount Abantos with the historic La Herreria estate near Madrid.
Felipe II selected Mount Abantos in 1562 as the location for the Royal Monastery of El Escorial, acquiring La Herreria estate for timber and fodder.
The Arboreto Luis Ceballos Environmental Education Center maintains a collection of native trees and shrubs from the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands.
The area contains numerous hiking trails connecting to the main points of interest, including the Felipe II Chair and the Virgen de Gracia Hermitage.
The protected space houses populations of Apollo and Spanish Moon Moths, two species under special protection by the Madrid Community.
