Llamas Park, Urban park in Santander, Spain
Llamas Park is an urban green space in Santander featuring a central lagoon surrounded by wooden walkways and cycling paths. The grounds include playgrounds, cafes, and an amphitheater for public events.
The area was originally a wetland where peat was extracted for a pottery factory during the 19th century. Its transformation into the current park occurred in 2007, repurposing the historic terrain.
The park showcases plants from different climate zones, drawing visitors who want to experience nature within the city. More than half of the trees are native to the region, creating a familiar green setting.
The park has three parking areas and offers about 2.5 kilometers of bicycle paths for easy movement. Drinking fountains and several cafes are distributed throughout, so visitors can easily find water and refreshments.
The central lagoon's reed bed supports dense vegetation that shelters migratory birds during their seasonal journeys. Visitors can observe birds from the wooden walkways without disturbing the fragile habitats.
