Tozal del Mallo, Mountain summit in Ordesa Valley, Spain
Tozal del Mallo is a 2,280-meter (7,480 ft) summit featuring steep limestone walls that tower above the surrounding landscape of Ordesa National Park. The area is known for its numerous climbing routes of varying difficulty spread across its main rock faces.
Jean Ravier and his team completed the first successful ascent of the south face in 1957, marking a watershed moment for the climbing community. This pioneering achievement sparked further exploration and eventually led to the development of the climbing routes that exist there today.
This summit is a significant meeting place for climbers from around the world, who come to test themselves on its famous rock faces. The local climbing community values the history embedded in each route and the mountaineers who pioneered them.
Reaching the summit requires good physical fitness and climbing experience, as the routes range from intermediate to very difficult. Spring and fall offer the most stable weather and safest climbing conditions throughout the year.
The south face contains more than 100 established climbing routes ranging from grade 5c to 8a, including the famous Vía Ravier. Some of these routes follow natural cracks and features in the rock face that are accessible only to experienced climbers.
