La Brèche de Roland

The natural gap measures 40 meters wide and 100 meters high, forming a distinct break in the mountain range at 2807 meters elevation point.

The pass gained recognition during the 8th century when Count Roland's troops used this route during their military campaigns in the Pyrenees mountains.

Local tales narrate how Roland created the gap by striking the mountain with his sword Durendal after the Battle of Roncevaux Pass.

Hikers can reach the pass through marked trails from both Gavarnie in France and Torla in Spain, with mountain shelters available near the routes.

The geological formation creates strong wind currents between France and Spain, generating specific climbing conditions throughout different seasons of the year.
