Sant Nicolau Castle, Defense tower at Ciutadella port, Spain.
Sant Nicolau Castle is a defense tower at the entrance to Ciutadella harbor with an octagonal structure built from local limestone. A deep moat and drawbridge form its outer defenses.
Spanish military engineers built the tower between 1680 and 1682 to protect the harbor. British forces later added interior chambers during their occupation from 1798 to 1802.
The entrance displays baroque stone carvings that mix military design with Mediterranean artistic traditions. You can see this blend of function and decoration as you walk through.
The town of Ciutadella maintains the tower and it is open to the public free of charge. You can visit the artillery terrace and enjoy the views from the highest point.
A central column supports the vaulted ceiling and connects to a spiral staircase leading to an observation turret. This turret once served for coastal watching and is still accessible today.
