Mercat, Historical market in Ciutadella, Spain.
Mercat is a market building in the center of Ciutadella with a central metal framework surrounded by covered walkways featuring large rounded arches. The structure organizes vendor stalls within a roofed layout designed for practical shopping and circulation.
The building was created in two phases: the initial design was completed between 1868 and 1869 by Ramón Cavaller Gelabert as part of urban renewal. The central metal structure was added in 1895 and introduced modern construction techniques to the town.
Local sellers present their goods at individual stalls, offering a window into how the island community feeds itself and gathers together. The space functions as a social hub where neighbors and visitors naturally cross paths and exchange greetings.
The building sits in the center of the old town and is easy to reach on foot. The covered passages provide shelter in rainy weather and allow comfortable walking during hot days.
The central metal structure was added during renovation work in the 1890s and stands as one of few remaining examples of this type of ironwork on the island. This construction method was progressive for its time and few buildings on Menorca preserved such work.
