Church of San Mateo

The Church of San Mateo is a Gothic place of worship in Cáceres's old quarter with a single-nave interior. Its Renaissance entrance portal displays medallions showing Saint Peter and Saint Paul in stone relief.

Construction started in the 16th century under Esteban de Lezcano and took the place of an earlier mosque. This change reflects the religious transformation that the city experienced during that period.

The church is named after Saint Matthew and serves as a spiritual anchor in the historic quarter. Locals and visitors use the space for worship and quiet reflection throughout the day.

The building sits on Plaza de San Mateo 2 and opens for religious services and visits during posted hours. Check the schedule beforehand, as times may shift depending on church events or celebrations.

The clock on the church tower came originally from Torre Bujaco and served merchants in the square as a time reference for about 200 years. It was a practical landmark that helped coordinate daily activities in the city.
