The building features three gargoyles on its facade depicting a weeping woman, an elderly man, and a monkey holding a child.
The palace dates back to the 15th century when Gonzalo de Cáceres and Marina Alonso de los Nidos ordered its construction as their residence.
The interior courtyard contains a sculpture of a chained monkey, which inspired numerous local legends and gave the building its current name.
The Casa del Mono houses the Alonso Zamora Vicente Library, which maintains a collection of 30,000 volumes for public access.
The building served as the Museum of Fine Arts before transforming into its current function as a specialized library and research center.
