Favàritx Lighthouse, Maritime lighthouse in Cape Favàritx, Menorca, Spain
Favàritx Lighthouse is a cylindrical concrete tower standing on the northern tip of Menorca, painted with black and white spiral bands that create a striking contrast against the dark slate cliffs. The structure rises to a height that makes it visible from far out at sea, serving as a key maritime landmark.
Construction began in 1917 as a response to repeated shipwrecks occurring along the northern coast. The project faced funding challenges that extended completion until 1922.
The lighthouse maintains a permanent exhibition about maritime signaling, offering educational visits for schools and groups to learn about navigation history.
The lighthouse is accessible by road from Maó, though conditions are best outside the summer peak season when access restrictions are fewer. The terrain leading to the site is rocky, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
The structure uses a visual identification system with black and white spiral bands that allows ships to recognize it even in daylight, long before electronic navigation became standard. This design feature made the tower useful for maritime orientation at any time of day.
