S'Albufera des Grau Natural Park, Natural park in Mahón, Spain
S'Albufera des Grau is a protected park at Mahón's coast that brings together wetlands, small islands, and farming areas in one large expanse. The terrain stretches across several kilometers along the Mediterranean shore, combining different landscape types within its boundaries.
The area became protected in 1995 after environmental movements in the 1980s resisted urban expansion. These efforts to protect the land led to Menorca being recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
The name refers to a salt lagoon that once anchored this landscape. Walking through, you notice traditional farmsteads built into the surroundings, showing how people have lived here in balance with the land.
You can explore the area on foot or by bicycle using several trails, with different entry points from Mahón. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit, when the weather is mild and birds are easier to spot.
The park hosts over 100 bird species, including rare migrants that follow routes across the Mediterranean. Visitors can observe completely different bird populations depending on the season, witnessing the cycles of migration.
