Parc Natural de s'Albufera des Grau, Nature reserve in Menorca, Spain
The Natural Park of s'Albufera des Grau stretches along the northeastern coast of Menorca and contains wetlands, coastal lagoons, and salt marshes. These water-filled areas form a complex system where shallow lagoons and muddy ground support plant and animal life.
The area faced development pressures during the 1970s that threatened to change its character. In 1995 it received official protection, which halted construction plans and allowed the natural systems to recover and thrive.
The lagoon has been a place where local fishing families worked in harmony with the water for generations. This relationship with the landscape remains visible in how the wetlands function and support life today.
You can explore the park on three marked walking trails that guide you through the different habitats. An information center provides binoculars so you can watch birds and other wildlife from a safe distance.
Parts of the lagoon reach depths of up to three meters and host rare aquatic plants like Ruppia cirrhosa. These particular plants form the foundation that allows fish and waterfowl to thrive in these waters.
