Convento de Santa Isabel de los Reyes, Toledo

The Convento de Santa Isabel de los Reyes is a convent in Toledo built upon two 14th-century Mudejar palaces and featuring Gothic architectural elements. The building preserves a wooden coffered ceiling and several artworks, including an altarpiece from 1572 in Plateresque style with relief decoration.

The convent was founded in 1477 and reused rebuilt palaces that previously belonged to a queen for its religious mission. This transformation shows how the Catholic Monarchs supported religious institutions through generous donations.

The name honors Saint Isabel and the royal support given to this place, reflecting its importance to the community. The spaces still display crafted details such as ceramic friezes that show the skill of artisans from that era.

The convent is normally open during daytime hours and can be reached on foot from Toledo's old town. Visitors should wear layers since the indoor spaces can be cool and wear sturdy shoes to protect the historic floors.

The church portal dates from 1500 and blends Gothic and Mudejar style elements, a rare example of this mix in a sacred structure. The choir area holds a 16th-century ceramic plinth with painted tiles showing how craft and decoration were woven into everyday spaces.
