Estatua de Don Pelayo

The Estatua de Don Pelayo is a bronze sculpture standing on the esplanade of the Basilica of Santa Maria la Real in Covadonga, depicting King Pelayo with impressive craftsmanship. The work shows the historical figure in a commanding pose, with careful detail in the drapery and facial features.

Sculptor Gerardo Zaragoza created this monument in 1964 to honor King Pelayo, who led the Battle of Covadonga against Moorish forces in 722. The statue was made centuries after the events it depicts and later received recognition as a cultural heritage site.

The inscription on the pedestal comes from the Chronicle of Alfonso III and links the statue to Spain's medieval Christian heritage. It occupies a place of great importance for the nation's identity.

The monument stands on the open plaza next to the Basilica and is directly accessible from the main pathway leading to the Santa Cueva sanctuary. Visitors can find it easily by following the route to the sanctuary without needing special navigation.

The work was designated a cultural heritage site in 1969, making it one of the protected historical monuments of the region. This official recognition reflects the monument's significance in Spanish memory.
