Vesilinna, Water tower on Yliopistonmäki hill, Turku, Finland
Vesilinna is a water tower located on Yliopistonmäki hill in Turku, designed by architects Erik Bryggman and Albert Richardson. The building stores water in two large tanks beneath its gray limestone and sandstone exterior, which features vertical pilasters along its rectangular base.
Construction of this tower began in the 1930s but paused during the Winter War, resuming after 1941 when it was finally completed. The building thus reflects the turbulent period of Finland's recent past.
The tower represents a combination of industrial design and public utility, created by architects Erik Bryggman and Albert Richardtson.
The tower stands prominently on a hilltop, making it easy to spot from various parts of the city and helpful for getting your bearings in central Turku. Its elevated location also means you can see it from considerable distances.
The structure features gray limestone and sand facades with distinct pilasters framing the rectangular base of the building.
