Ikituuri, Student apartment building in Turku Student Village, Finland
Ikituuri is an elliptical, copper-clad apartment tower in the Student Village of Turku, rising to 43 meters across 12 floors. The apartments are arranged around a central staircase, and each floor holds eight units, all with individual balconies.
The building was designed by Pekka Mäki of SIGGE Architects after winning an architectural competition, and it was completed in 2011. The original plan called for eight floors, but the project grew to its current twelve during the design process.
The rooftop sauna and terrace at the top floor show how communal life is woven into Finnish student housing. Residents gather there above the city, sharing a space that would be unusual in most student buildings elsewhere in Europe.
The tower stands in the Student Village of Turku, within walking distance of university facilities and everyday services. Since this is a purely residential building, visitors can only view it from the outside.
The building draws on an underground geothermal system that circulates warmth and cool air through wells to keep a steady temperature all year. This kind of energy system is rare in ordinary housing blocks and makes it an early example of this approach in Finnish residential construction.
