Ikituuri, Student apartment building in Turku Student Village, Finland
Ikituuri is an elliptical apartment building with copper cladding in Turku Student Village that rises 12 stories to about 43 meters tall. Apartments are arranged around a central staircase, with each floor holding eight units ranging from 30 to 45 square meters and individual balconies.
The building was completed in 2011 after winning an architectural competition led by Pekka Mäki of SIGGE Architects. The initial design called for 8 floors but was later expanded to the current 12-story structure.
The tower shows how Finnish architecture responds to student life today, with its circular design creating shared moments while private balconies give each resident their own space. The rooftop sauna and terrace reflect the importance of communal gathering in student housing culture.
The building sits in the Student Village with good access to university facilities and nearby local services. Keep in mind this is primarily a residential building, so public access to interior spaces may be limited.
The building uses an underground geothermal system that circulates warm and cold air through wells to maintain stable temperature year-round. This innovative energy approach is typical of modern Finnish design and reduces reliance on conventional heating.
