Posankka, Public sculpture at Turku Student Village, Finland
Posankka is a five-meter-tall fiberglass sculpture at Turku Student Village that blends pig and duck features in bright pink. The work stands near Caribia spa hotel along Helsinki Road, serving as a recognizable landmark for those entering the city.
The work was created by artist Alvar Gullichsen in 1999 and first appeared floating in the Aurajoki River. It was moved to its current location next to the Student Village in 2001.
Students dress the sculpture with seasonal headwear during academic celebrations, turning it into a living symbol of campus traditions. These decorations appear regularly throughout the year, marking important moments in the student calendar.
The sculpture sits alongside a main road where it is easily visible from both vehicles and on foot. There is ample space around it for people to walk close by and take photographs from different angles.
The sculpture once held a hidden interior room where students gathered for impromptu musical performances and social meetings. This secret space shows how public art can become woven into student life and community moments.
