Sirkkala Barracks, Historical military facility in I District, Turku, Finland
Sirkkala Barracks is a military complex in Turku's I District with multiple buildings constructed throughout the 19th century. The site includes structures in various architectural styles designed by different master builders.
The facility was founded in 1846 as housing for the Finnish Grenadier Battalion. In the 1860s, the barracks came under Russian control, fundamentally changing the character of the installation.
The buildings show how the needs for soldier housing changed over the 19th century. Visitors can still see today how the different building phases reflect different construction methods and room layouts.
The site is now part of the University of Turku and houses the History Department. Keep in mind that some areas may have limited access during academic periods.
The main building erected in 1875 was Finland's first structure designed specifically for permanent soldier housing. This marked a turning point in the development of military architecture in the country.
