Sompasauna, Public bath in Hermanninranta, Helsinki, Finland.
Sompasauna is a wood-heated sauna complex consisting of three separate buildings situated directly on the shoreline of the Baltic Sea in the Sörnäinen district. The facility operates as a free-access, self-service installation without staff or changing rooms.
The project was founded in 2011 by local residents as a self-service community sauna facility. The structure has been rebuilt several times following vandalism incidents and fire damage.
The facility reflects Finnish sauna traditions through its community-managed structure, where visitors contribute to maintaining the space and heating the saunas. Neighbors regularly gather here as part of their daily routine, strengthening their connection to this way of life.
The location is near Kalasatama metro station and offers free access around the clock. Visitors should know that there are no fixed staff, scheduled hours, or designated changing areas.
Visitors can alternate between the intense heat of wood-fired saunas and swimming in the Baltic Sea throughout the year. This practice of alternating heat and cold is deeply rooted in Finnish tradition and is experienced here with direct sea access.
