Lac du Ballon is a reservoir in the Vosges mountains at approximately 990 meters elevation with a water surface spanning several hectares. The lake is fed by mountain streams and sits in a forested mountain setting.
The lake was created in the 17th century by military engineer Vauban to supply water for the nearby fortress of Neuf-Brisach. This engineered structure has remained part of the Vosges landscape since then.
The lake's name comes from the nearby Grand Ballon, the highest peak in the Vosges mountains. Today it serves as a gathering place for hikers exploring this mountain region.
The lake can be reached via hiking trails starting from Guebwiller heading toward Markstein and continuing to Haag farm near Grand Ballon. The paths are well-marked and accessible on foot.
The lake serves as the source of Belchenseebach stream, an important waterway in the region. This source feeds into a larger river system that shapes the surrounding landscape.
