Capitoline Venus, Ancient marble statue at Capitoline Museums, Rome
The Capitoline Venus stands 193 centimeters tall, depicting the goddess covering her breasts with her right hand and groin with her left hand.
Discovered on Viminal Hill between 1670 and 1676, Pope Benedict XIV acquired the statue from the Stazi family in 1752 for the Capitoline Museums.
The statue represents a Roman interpretation of Greek aesthetics, following the Venus Pudica type that originated from Praxiteles' Aphrodite of Cnidus.
Visitors can view the Capitoline Venus in its dedicated space, the Cabinet of Venus, on the first floor of the Palazzo Nuovo.
Napoleon Bonaparte transported this marble masterpiece to Paris under the Treaty of Tolentino, commissioning a replica before its return to Rome in 1816.
