Le Lioran, Ski resort in Cantal, France.
Le Lioran is a ski resort in the Cantal department, set in the volcanic mountains of the Massif Central in France. The slopes run down the flanks of the Plomb du Cantal and cover a range of terrain from gentle runs to steeper descents.
The resort was developed in the second half of the 20th century as winter tourism grew in the Massif Central. The railway station in the valley, which dates back to the late 19th century, played a key role in making the area accessible long before the ski lifts were built.
Le Lioran is one of the few ski resorts in the Massif Central, which gives it a special place among French ski destinations. Most visitors come from the Auvergne and surrounding regions, giving the place a local, down-to-earth character rather than an international one.
The resort can be reached by train from several cities in the Auvergne, which is uncommon for a ski area in France. Those arriving by car should carry snow chains or winter tires, as the mountain roads can become slippery in cold conditions.
Le Lioran is one of the few ski resorts in France where the train stops right in the village, so visitors can step off directly into the snow. The station sits at around 3,770 feet (1,150 meters) above sea level, making it one of the highest regular train stops in the country.
