Château d'O, 18th-century castle in Montpellier, France

Château d'O is an 18th-century castle in Montpellier featuring a symmetrical main building with a noble floor and an attic section crowned by a distinctive circular window. The property includes formal gardens and two performance spaces: an indoor theater seating 230 people and an outdoor amphitheater for larger audiences.

Built between 1743 and 1750 by architect Charles Gabriel Le Blanc for the viscount Jean-Emmanuel de Guignard, the castle emerged as an important aristocratic residence. Over time it changed hands and eventually was adapted for public cultural uses.

The estate now serves as a performance venue where visitors can experience theater productions and artistic events in spaces both indoors and outdoors. This dual use brings together the classical setting with contemporary cultural activities, making it an active gathering place for the community.

The property is open to visitors from Tuesday through Sunday, with outdoor areas accessible year-round. It is helpful to check ahead for any scheduled performances, as some areas may be reserved for events.

The grounds preserve original boxwood parterres and ancient Aleppo pines that have survived for centuries. These botanical elements reveal how the landscape was designed during the 18th century and add historical depth to a walk through the gardens.
