Mine témoin d'Alès

Mine témoin d'Alès is a coal mining museum housed in a former active pit. The 650-meter-long tunnels display different extraction methods and technologies used across various time periods.

The pit became a training facility starting in 1945 where apprentices learned mining techniques. This role lasted until 1968 and preserved an important chapter in the region's mining heritage.

The galleries show how miners worked and lived during the coal era. You can see equipment, tools, and scenes that reveal what daily life was like underground.

The tunnels are underground and can be cool and damp, so appropriate clothing helps. Guides lead you through the main sections and explain the equipment and working conditions.

The tunnels beneath Montaud hill preserve traces of very early mining activities dating back to medieval times. These underground passages document hundreds of years of mining history in a single location.
