Pointe des Mattes, Mountain summit in Abondance Valley, France
Pointe des Mattes is a mountain summit in the French Alps within the Haute-Savoie region and forms part of the Mont de Grange massif. The peak rises to approximately 2100 meters and overlooks the Abondance Valley with its Alpine meadows and forested slopes.
The area was traditionally crossed by herders and farmers from the Abondance Valley who used the high pastures for summer livestock grazing. The marked hiking paths, including sections of the GR5 trail, were developed and improved into systematic networks in the decades that followed.
Local mountain guides lead groups through marked departmental trails, sharing knowledge about Alpine flora and geological formations throughout the seasons.
The ascent starts from Panthiaz car park and follows marked mountain trails with green blazes. The route takes several hours and requires good hiking fitness, with visitors needing to prepare for changing weather conditions at altitude.
From the summit on clear days, visitors can see both the Abondance Valley and the Swiss Alps spread across the horizon. The location sits within a protected environmental area designated for conservation purposes.
